A table is not set. It is composed.
The Ivy Service begins as fine bone ash and feldspar, pressed by hand and rested before it ever meets fire. What follows is patience: a glaze fired first, a 24k gold decal laid by hand and returned to the kiln so it becomes part of the porcelain rather than something resting upon it.

The ivy that travels each rim is drawn from a single continuous vine — an old emblem of constancy, of what holds fast and returns each season. Nothing on these pieces is decoration for its own sake.

Bone china is unforgiving. It is thin enough to hold light and thin enough to fail, and there is no repairing a rim once the gold has gone through the kiln. So the work is measured in rests rather than hours — the clay rested, the glaze rested, the gilding left alone until it is ready.

A service made this way is not replaced. It is set down, cleared, and set again, for as many years as a family keeps the habit.
